Why should lawns be regularly mowed and mulched? Regular mulching prevents unwanted weed and space stealers such as dock, thistle, tufted hairgrass, buttercup and veratrum from spreading and thus improves the plant composition. There is also no need for removal and disposal if the cut material is used as fertiliser. Expensive chemical compositions can therefore be foregone with no problem, which is good for your wallet as well as the environment. By returning the cut material to the soil, the appearance is also made significantly more even by encouraging respiratory activity in the soil organisms – another positive effect on the lawn. How does a modern mulcher work? Inside the housing of a mulcher or mower, so-called flail blades or hammers are mounted to a rotor shaft, which shred all plant residues by means of high rotational speed while the attachment is being pulled or pushed over the green space by a towing vehicle. These are shredded (optionally to some extent) on fine mulching profiles in the housing which further encourage the shredding and defibration of the mulch material. As a result, the finely mulched plant remains mulch faster and provide valuable fertiliser for the growing plants. The right mulching height is at least 5 cm, otherwise quick, even growing is prevented. The grass should ideally be dry before mulching – this improves the mulch quality. In order to prevent weed growth, the ideal mulching time is before flowers or seeds are produced.
